Wenhao, 18 years old, is a student studying in a local Junior College. Born in the Henan Province of China, Wenhao's mum made the decision and sent him to Singapore when he was merely in Primary School, in hope of letting him receive the best education so that he does not need to live in poverty for the rest of his life.
Over the years, Wenhao has been relying on public donations from charitable and religious organisations to pay for his school fees so that he can continue schooling. However, there is a cap to the length of support that the donations were able to stretch to continue supporting Wenhao till he completes his course.
Help Needed - Give Hope
Wenhao was forced to be independent at an early age, after his father passed away when he was merely one year old from pneumonia. His mother subsequently remarried and although Wenhao still keeps in contact with her occasionally, she does not support him financially after having a family of her own.
Through our conversations with him, the case workers could feel Wenhao's sense of helplessness about his predicaments, especially when his school chases him for payment every month. The shy and reserved Wenhao said that he’s immensely grateful to the people who have donated and helped him in one way of another over the years. Wenhao told us how without a source of income and having to constantly rely on donations might not seem like a sustainable solution to many, but he would give it his best so that he can make his parents proud. Wenhao has an elder brother (25 years old) who is currently in China, but is unable to work since he was diagnosed with some form of mental illness.
As Wenhao is a non-Singaporean, he does not qualify for any government assistance schemes for subsidies on his school fees.
ROHI would like to support 18-year-old Wenhao by helping him with his school fees of S$19,524 (S$1,627 x 12 months) so that he can continue schooling. Payment will be made directly to the school.
*Wenhao does not qualify for public assistance due to his non-Singaporean citizenship
