Even at 74 years old, Mdm Lim was still working as a hawker just to make ends meet to support her 3 grandsons back home. Every day, be it rain or shine, she gets up early in the morning to prepare the ingredients and took charge of everything from cooking, cleaning, to serving and attending to the customers. Even though it tires her out and she is left exhausted at the end of the day, she works hard just to make sure she earns enough to ensure that there is food on the table for her grandsons at home.
After she lost her husband to cancer 7 years ago, Mdm Lim has single-handedly raised 3 grandsons since they were young. The parents of her grandchildren are divorced and the kids no longer have any contact with their mum. Mdm Lim shared with us that the mother of the grandchildren was an alcoholic who is often abusive to the children. She used to dump the kids with Mdm Lim when they were younger, and when the kids were hungry and asked her for food, she would make them ransack through garbage bins to scavenge for food. Mdm Lim confided that her heart aches knowing what her grandchildren went through. Even up till today, the kids are still traumatized and could vividly recall the scene. The grandsons’ mum also borrowed a lump sum of money from Mdm Lim to buy a house and to pay for renovation arrears. With her grandchildren’ interests in mind, she withdrew a portion of her CPF payout and lent it to the couple. Unfortunately, the mother of her grandchildren took the money and fled with another man. Mdm Lim was devastated when she found out the truth, but what broke her heart was when her own son stole the money that was meant to be the hard earned Angbao savings for his children. Mdm Lim told us that he escaped to a gambling ship with the money he stole and lost all of it. Though it pains her heart, she reported her child to the police, hoping that by turning him in, her son will learn his ways and change for the better. Her son is currently in prison custody and is awaiting to be sentenced.
The grandmother had no choice but to continue to struggle working as a hawker at her age, and grit her teeth to make ends meets. Albeit trying for her, she was still able to earn an adequate income to support the family. Things took a turn for the worse when she suffered a workplace injury, and was scalded by hot oil causing her skin to be inflamed. After weeks of persevering on, Mdm Lim had no choice but to give up the hawker stall as she could no longer endure the excruciating pain. Her wound is not healing due to her diabetic condition and also partly because she did not seek immediate medical treatment when it happened. On top of that, Mdm Lim suffers from chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol, which requires her to be on long-term medication. Mdm Lim is currently not earning any income and is worried that her depleted savings will not be sufficient for her to support her grandsons. Even though she has another two sons and a daughter, they are hardly of any support for their elderly mum.
Additionally, grandma is also concerned about the well-being of her grandchildren as one of them is at risk and constantly plays truant from school. Hence, she hopes that the funds raised could be used to support and finance her grandsons’ pocket money allowances as they are still schooling.
ROHI hopes to raise $300/month for 4 months for her grandchildren’s allowances. Your kind donations will go a long way in helping grandma support herself and her grandchildren!

Ah Ma's First Cheque Disbursement
We met Ah ma recently for her first cheque disbursement and was glad to hear from her that she is helping out at one of her relatives' store now. Even though the wound on her leg has yet to recover, ah ma wants to get back to work as quickly as she can, so that she can help earn some income to support her family. However, since she is only working a few hours every day, her pay is barely enough to cover for the family's expenses. She is also appreciative of the kind donations from the donors as well as donors who came forward and delivered groceries to her.
