Mr Zainuddin, 63 years old, is unable to stand for long periods of time and is dependant on a wheelchair. Mr Zainuddin suffers from a long list of serious and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high cholesterol, ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, gout and osteoarthritis. He is unable to stand for long period of time due to his advanced osteoarthritis and gout.
Mr Zainuddin is unable to work due to his age and illnesses including being dependent on a wheelchair. Due to his many various chronic illnesses, he is frequently at the hospital for check-ups and consumes a total of 23 medications a day. Even though Mr Zainuddin himself requires assistance with day to day living, he is the main caretaker of his younger sister who has an undiagnosed mental disorder. She can turn violent and would often hit herself. She is also unable to care for herself and requires round the clock supervision. He currently stays in his late brother’s flat with his younger sister and his younger brother who works as a security officer. Mr Zainuddin’s younger brother pays for the electricity and conservancy charges however, as he does not earn much as a security officer, he is unable to fully support Mr Zainuddin and his younger sister with regards to their food and daily necessities.
Mr Zainuddin informs us that as his late brother has passed away in 2015, HDB is in the process of selling the flat and he fears that they will be left homeless. Mr Zainuddin receives S$400 from SSO however that is barely enough to cover his and his younger sister’s expenses. Mr Zainuddin attends therapy at a senior activity centre near his house which costs S$220 a month and he is left with S$180 to survive monthly. Most of the money goes towards buying food for his sister as he is unable to stand for long periods of time to cook.
Mr Zainuddin was working hard as a cleaner until his osteoarthritis worsen and he was forced to quit in 2015. Life has since been difficult for him as despite his pain, he has to care for his sister who is mentally ill.
ROHI would therefore like to raise S$400 a month for 3 months for Mr Zainuddin and his sister’s living expenses while he applies for MUIS assistance.
