Mdm Maryam*, 35 years old, is a resilient and hardworking single mother to three children between the ages of 4 – 13 years old. She and her children are PR citizens. 2 of her children were born in Singapore and they have lived their whole lives here. She and her children were victims of physical, emotional and verbal abuse. Her estranged husband is a compulsive gambler and rarely provided for his children’s necessity. Mdm Maryam left her estranged husband in 2016 after he threatened to kill her and their innocent children.
They stayed in a crisis shelter for domestic abuse victims for 1 ½ years before moving into an open market room rental. Mdm Maryam and her children have recently moved back into their purchased HDB flat at the end of September after she successfully applied for a court order to evict her estranged husband as she would like her children to grow up in a better and more conducive environment.
Mdm Maryam has started divorce proceedings against her husband and has a Personal Protection Order (PPO) against him. Her children are currently under Child Protection Order (CPO) and sees their father in the presence of a child protection officer.
After moving back into her flat with her children, Mdm Maryam was shocked to find out that her estranged husband has not been paying for the electricity bills and their home mortgage that he took a loan with a local bank in Singapore. As such, as she is now the main occupant of the flat, she is forced to take on the debts incurred with SP and DBS.
Mdm Maryam tearfully informed us that she was recently forced to borrow S$300 from relatives and friends as she had to pay the electricity company after they informed her that they will cut their electricity supply.
Help Needed- Give Hope
Mdm Maryam is currently working hard as a packer for a company. Even though the job is physically demanding, Mdm Maryam strives her best to provide for her three children. As a single mother with 3 children, living expenses are extremely high and her salary is insufficient for the family of 4. Her children are PR citizens and their school fees are expensive. To further add to her worries, she has to incur the debts that her estranged husband left behind after they moved into their flat.
ROHI has previous assisted Mdm Maryam with their living expenses. However, they require additional assistance as she has incurred arrears that her estranged husband left behind.
ROHI would therefore like to raise another S$750 (S$250 x 3 months) to defray Mdm Maryam’s living expenses while we refer her to an organisation that can offer her debt advisory. Please give hope to Mdm Maryam. She and her children were victims of abuse and Mdm Maryam was forced to take on debts that was incurred by her husband. Please help the resilient family through this very difficult period in life!
