Lunar New Year is one of the festivals widely celebrated by many communities all over the world. It is also the time when one gets to be dressed in new clothes, gather with their families and loved ones to indulge in festive feasting. It is always about being together with your family members and to be able to look forward to a better year ahead.
While many families have the privilege to celebrate the Lunar New Year, many of our beneficiaries do not have the luxury to do so due to their families’ financial constraints. One of ROHI’s clients, Mdm Ng, aged 87 years old, suffers from severe dementia. Her condition has deteriorated drastically over the years, and she is no longer able to recognize her own family members. Her 66-year-old daughter works through tiresome night shifts, just to ensure that there is food on the table for the family. Her son suffers from depression and does not hold a job for long.
Another client, Mr Chong shared with us that as much as he would like to would like to move around for as long as he could, he often finds himself bounded within the four walls of his rental flat, staring at the ceiling. Like many other elderly in Singapore, Mr Chong who suffers from depression also lives in isolation. He was living with his mum and his two brothers before they passed on. It wasn’t easy taking in the deaths of his family members, especially when he shared a close relationship with his two brothers who supported him emotionally and financially. Now, he has no one left to turn to.
ROHI is creating this campaign in order to raise S$200 for each of the 10 families featured whose fundraiser campaigns have not been raised to target, or have ended, so that they are able to celebrate the Lunar New Year with dignity, pride and joy just like us. As we celebrate and indulge in the festive season, let's not forget that a little goes a long way in giving the families some hope! We believe that every little help counts. A S$50 donation will buy a family of 4 a meal. You never know how impactful your small gestures of kindness can be, especially when it has the power to make another person's day better!
ROHI wishes to thank all the donors who have donated to this fundraiser campaign! The $2,000 raised will mean a lot to the 10 beneficiaries and their families whom we had identified, as the amount would help defray their Lunar New Year expenses! We will visit the beneficiaries soon and keep you updated.
